This week it’s an absolute fever dream in Legend of the Gold of Babylon, the strangest Lupin caper yet. Then we return to the world of Ghibli with the coziest witch adventure in Kiki’s Delivery Service.

A very good reimagining of a classic.
Gory and some darkly funny moments.

Possibly as bad as The Exorcist II: Heretic. The original is a character focused masterpiece that builds atmosphere and tension steadily until the climax. This speedruns the character development, ignores the atmosphere and just wants to get to the exorcism.

I think being stuffed into one of those suits would have been a better experience.

Low on horror but a slow burn that’s thick with tension and tells a beautiful story of loneliness and family bonds.

They mashed the first 2 games together and it really doesn’t work. The characterisation and dynamics suck. It ends with sequel bait but they’ve put massive roadblocks to those sequels narratively. It’s shot nice but the CG is pretty bad.

The more interesting of the reinterpretations. With more tension, more atmosphere and a more competent sense of direction that really carry the wilder ideas it has.

An experiment in taking the base concepts and adding in other ideas, for mixed results. It lacks in cinematic presentation and rather than seek to build tension, relies on cheap jump scares. Eventually, culminating in what feels like needless implied gruesomeness.

Once there was an ugly Grudge, it was so ugly that everyone died. The end.

I like that it pays homage to the whole franchise from The Curse through to The Grudge. But it doesn’t trust in its audience tho, is heavy handed in exposition and lacks an understanding of what made the originals work both in scares and in genuinely good characterisation.

I wasn’t expecting this to somehow wrap up the whole 4 films worth of story but it managed to do it in an interesting and compelling story. Possibly the best use of the non-linear structure of the series. More effective use of Toshio and Kayako too over the previous movie.

Rather than rehash the original low budget movies, this acts as more of a continuation. With more masterful crafting behind the ideas and an elevation to the cinematography. Some raw tension is gone from the originals but nonetheless a great movie.

This one just felt… unnecessary? It felt strange but not entirely in a positive way. I think the first film could have been left as is and didn’t need expansion. It almost felt like all the ideas they weren’t sure what to do with.

Wow, I kinda wasn’t expecting something as affective from this. A number of moments had me on edge. As a precursor to The Grudge, the DNA is very much already here. It has lulls but for a first movie, this was a great watch.
