TEXT: Today in Financial History from Rebellious Resources - November 2, 1903: St. Luke's Penny Savings Bank opens. Maggie Lena Walker chartered St. Luke's Penny Savings Bank in Richmond, VA, becoming the first Black woman to charter a bank. She was the first Black woman to serve as bank president; several women served on the bank's board. Juvenile Branch for the Independent Order of St. Luke taught financial planning to its young members. St. Luke's was established in the Jackson Ward area of Richmond, VA, one of the country's many so-called Black Wall Streets. St. Luke's later merged with other financial institutions, but would remain a Black-owned bank serving members of the community until it was sold in 2005.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act became law on October 31, 1978. Prior to that, it was legal to be fired for becoming pregnant & employers could ask about family planning. The Ghoulish Oppression Party wants to revive that monster.

Text: National 401(k) Day! 401(k) plans are tax-advantaged retirement savings programs generally offered by employers, although solo 401(k) options do exist. Quick Facts: The U.S. has 70 million active 401(k) accounts totalling $9T in assets; investors under age 60 can contribute up to $70,000 per year, and investors 50-plus can contribute up to $77,500, including employer match. Traditional 401(k) contributions come from gross (pre-tax) earnings, reducing your taxable income for the year. However, withdrawals will be taxed at the time of distribution. Roth 401(k) contributions come from your net earnings, which have already been taxed. Therefore, withdrawals will not be taxed at the time of distribution. 401(k) plans are just one way of saving for retirement, and they may or may not be the right investment for your financial goals. Be sure to do your research and always keep learning! Source: Investment Company Institute.

Today is the FDIC's 92nd B-day! The Banking Act was signed into law by FDR on June 16, 1933, in an effort to restore trust in the U.S. financial system after 1/3 of banks failed during the Great Depression, leaving many penniless. #FinSky #EconSky #PoliSky

Created by the Banking Act of 1933 to restore consumer trust in the banking system after the Great Depression; Supplies up to $250,000 of deposit insurance to nearly 4,000 U.S. commercial and savings banks; Offers consumer protection resources and conducts research in areas in need of economic inclusion; One-third of U.S. banks failed between 1929 and 1933, many in poor rural areas where depositors lost their life savings. The FDIC was created to insure those deposits with "the full faith and trust of the U.S. government."
