It dates back to an argument with the Sophists and Plato, and you seem to be on Plato's side. Totally valid and its not for everyone.

Upon looking so do I! Lol.

We'd agree that something like twitch stream debate bros are mostly bad for democracy. But competitive debate is the best way to foster critical thinking in an academic setting.

We dont believe that is true at all. Meaningful discovery is exactly what the function of inquiry means.

But we wouldn't write of competitive debate so quickly. Even though we often argue what we dont believe it helps us think about the other side to strengthen our actual positions.

Often debaters think one thing is true but their research and evidence helps to change their minds, which can be good 2!

Hi! We agree with a lot of this. Argument has an advocacy function AND an inquiry function. We overlook the education and knowledge production too much. 1/2

If a person were debating in favor of fascism they'd be promptly kicked out of a debate round.

Even us pros know certain things arent debatable.
