Please don’t miss “akingdoncomethas” by Arthur Jafa on view at VMFA through Sunday. It is made up of vintage footage from Black church services and set against a haunting soundtrack. Two minutes in, I had tears streaming down my face. I can’t wait to come back to view the whole brilliant work.

I kind of love a brand that hasn’t done a label redesign in 60 years. (Wish I had documented that great LeSueur peas label when I had the chance.)

Two little accordion player figurines, acquired for fifty cents apiece, now nestled in our house full of oddities and junk.

When a fire alarm briefly interrupts the VMFA student pep rally for “Giants,” the Richmond City Public Schools All City Drum Line moves the party outside. Go, RPS!

He’s our little Barn-a-roo, and the brains of the whole operation.

Well, we ordered masks ages ago for a party tonight. They’re slated to arrive … November 6. Don asked, “Got any old file folders?” Two hours later: voila! (Boo!)

To the best of my knowledge, he’s never arm wrestled Fidel Castro or hand fed baby egrets while scaling a cliff, but he’s MY Most Interesting Man in the World. Happy birthday, Donald Schrader. To paraphrase my favorite musical Falsettos, without you, my life would be boring as $#it.

Found on EBay: Relic of my first (but by no means last) restaurant job. If you grew up in NoVa in the 1970s-80s, you probably have your own Fritzbe’s memories.

This little creature, aptly named the walking stick bug, was waiting for us at the back door yesterday morning.

Another find for friends who grew up in the DC area in the 60s and 70s: a three-hour reel tape of Washington’s easy listening station WGAY. It feels like childhood as seen through the car window, or an endless elevator ride. If this is your king of thing, enjoy. m.youtube.com/watch?v=clxF...

Two curiosities spotted in the VCU area: a twig nestled in a perfectly twig-shaped hole in the sidewalk (like the old Operation game) and the remains of an old key nailed to a staple-covered telephone pole. There truly is a place for everything.

Two years ago, our friends Chris and Howard gave us a pomegranate seedling no bigger than a pencil, and now look! Magical.

I’ve can never hear this jewel from “La Cage aux Folles” without tears streaming down my cheeks by the end. But I had never heard this great rendition by Gloria Gaynor. Let’s finish Pride Month strong, friends. In fact, let’s make it a Pride life. m.youtube.com/watch?v=_pVT...

From flying Air Force jets to helping engineer the Saturn V, my dad was always ascending, always in love with the higher ground. I think of him now like this: joyfully setting off on the soul’s next journey. Happy landings to you, Carroll Graham Jones. I know in my heart we’ll meet again.

Anyone remember a 1970s drugstore perfume called Windsong? Just realized that’s exactly what our ligustrum trees smell like. (Now to find plants that smell like Herbal Essence shampoo, Bonne Bell lipgloss, and Love’s Baby Soft.)
