I read this and support the dad. 'They' say parents should praise and reward the behaviours of their children, not the outcomes. If both kids are doing their best, then they're both equally praiseworthy: one just go a better outcome (which was also recognised).

If he stands up and owns it I'm all for it but if he pretends he doesn't I'm going to laugh at him.
Similarly if he wants to impose strict gender norms on others but doesn't apply them to himself I'm going to call out his hypocrisy.

I interpreted it as if you can make MEN think that women will be impressed by what bike they're riding, the climate crisis is over.
But I agree, if someone thinks they're interesting because of ostentatious displays of wealth, maybe that's not the right person for you.
