No, I don't put quotes around them. In the last manuscript I used them in, I looked up the format for it in the Chicago manual of style, because this book was going to print formatting later. When I looked, they didn't have a preferred style, but I liked the way they looked without quotes.

I usually put them in italics with a little text before to indicate the character is texting or reading the text.
