If he was using a polearm you'd have to be in gear because even a training polearm is hefty enough to smack your ass to the ground

You don't have any idea, that's not a "bad match-up", it's unwinnable. There's a reason why polearms were everywhere in combat and knives were relegated to "emergency backup" status
