I was just thinking that if garfield and friends was quanxi and her girlfriends who never die and have funny moments in their lives then it would be Quanxi n' Friends and be an improvememt on Chainsaw Man. Therefore, good point!

its so fucking stupid that he smiles. its so stupid that hes constantly smiling and extroverted and loud and not even slightly clever at all. to these people dave is going to be a meme character with zero emotional complexity or tenderness or realism of any kind

"no dude u gotta just skip acts 1-4 and get to the trolls!!" "the fanart and fanfic is better!!" like not to exonerate hussie but no wonder the huss burnt out, like, how can you feel like your work means anything when people are proudly refusing to challenge themselves to engage

i dont know what your experience with homestuck has been like but ive been a dedicated fan since 2010 and ive often felt like 'what the fuck webcomic are these hyperactive ferretbrains reading' with the fandom. but it feels further removed than its ever been and HSBC and the pilot worsen it a lot

its like he was written, drawn, and acted by someone who only knows dave strider through like 2010s memes about him. like his only attribute is "cool and arrogant kid", theres none of his weird pokerfacing internal tension, he can be such an understated character but we just get the caricature here

LEAVING ASIDE THE OBVIOUS LOGISTICAL ISSUES THERE LOL its such lazy and obvious bait to drive interest. the way dave is characterized feels like the way Caliborn writes him in Homosuck--smiling smug smirking Alpha Male who everyone wants to toootaally bone instead of like. poker facing insecure mess

A low point for me was like--there's a scene where John chides Dave for engaging in too many ironic shenanigans or w/e--but *nothing dave does is really all that ironic*, there's no time to show SBAHJ or dave's blog, so 'he is ironic' becomes just, a stated but undemonstrated Factoid about him

That's exactly it. The pilot showcases a bunch of the imagery but is so light on any actual substance that it becomes almost incoherent. They have to replace some of the more elaborate jokes with floppy one liners, and then waste limited screentime on terrible fourth wall breaks.

if this got greenlit they would need it to be a like -full- series, the complexity only scales and theyve already skipped so many things that are meant to be called back to later. time will tell, but im gratified to hear that the pacing issues were apparent from a semi outsider perspective as well!

and we have no idea what their deal is or why we should care. just sloppy storytelling, all flash and no substance. i still really love and recommend homestuck, if you ever have a mind to read it ill send ya my copy of the Unofficial Homestuck Collection!
