I've only in my third year of birding, but this and once last month are the only times I've seen the wing patches on females.

A different male northern cardinal taken a day after the first one, in a location about 15 miles from the first. (both in SW Ohio)

Cardinals get their red coloration from carotenoids in their diet— pigments found in seeds, fruits, and insects. If a cardinal's diet lacks the right kinds or quantities of carotenoids (especially the red and orange ones), their feathers might come out duller or even tinged with brown or purple.
