the shortest straw (an aubade) we grasp at straws in dreams the shortest selected and nearest to wakefulness; recalling the substance of sincere light through polarized glass the sunrise beams breaking apart against her supple velvet cinnamon legs wrapped around my waist as we greet the morning with our own lovely sinful rising where tongues taste each others wakeful moods and gripping tension is released within the satin folds of sleeps edge for a brief moment i live within the smudged corners of that dreaming bliss then fully waking with a start to a mostly darkened room, sharpening with the dawn the birds outside chirp and mock as the solitary sun peeks through the cracks in the blinds he is my biographer and my only companion, save for the shortest straw, clutched.

lament i greeted old man winter his arrival heralded; both baleful and morose with grays and stark nothingness he touched the ground arrested the fecundity and left me desperate and wonton for the green of my youth now lost beneath his frost-covered hands "why?" i lamented "why must we grow old and frail?" winters eyes softened and he looked as if he were a father speaking a great truth to his wayward son "tis natures way, my child of adam" and would say nothing else instead he took me in his arms and together we waited quiet and long for the release of spring to arrive.

The Monument Coming up over the rise, we finally saw it: the black glass obelisk jutted from the ground like a rotten tooth lodged into the mouth of this world. It felt wrong. Greasy oppressive energy radiated outwards in all directions and my companions and I struggled to keep from wretching with every step closer to this abomination. Even the vacant dark silica that stretched outward from it, surreal in both the depth of color and the sound it made when walked upon, seemed to be warning us to turn upon our heels and run. Yet, now close to the structure, there was a seed in the back corners of each of our minds that recognized the dark power, and grew each moment in proximity to it. Each would surely be tempted as I was, turning covetous in the desire for that rawness; that promise of potent force. Later, their screams of desire and betrayal would accompany the enveloping arms of my surreptitious blade, now openly wielded against them. Gods be damned, I would have this power for my own.

the ends Another week passed. People did what people did in that time, as they always did; they shopped, went to school, drove their cars, lied to each other, had arguments, and hurt one another. Standing on the walkway far above the enclosure, I wondered if they, as small as ants, had any clue that we were manipulating them with chemicals that subverted their ability to recall kindness. We had been doing it for just a few months now, but the outcome was clear. The chemicals of anger focused their seemingly limitless hatred to razor sharp points that they turned upon each other in horrible, yet fascinating ways. I felt some remorse that we did this, but my research notes had never been more full and complete.
