It started with getting rid of “gangs” and “violent criminals” who are eating cats and dogs and instead hardworking farmers were taken. They’ll always use a group to other and vilify to justify their means of doing much worse.

I don’t think people understand how much staring can affect people. Staring at gender non-conforming people, at black people or people of colour. It makes the exclusionary feeling very evident. It’s usually very obvious and sometimes even with pointing and laughing.

Post from r/ButchLesbians How do you deal with staring  So l'm very obviously masculine - I'm non-binary, tall, wide shoulders, skin fade etc. I get misgendered with Sir a lot which doesn't bother me that much. But on public transport at the moment people are constantly staring at me. I'm based in London and it seems to always be on the tube and 99% of the time cis men. It's really starting to bother me - I guess because it's a close space and occasionally it feels threatening. Usually I stare back so they know l've clocked them and sometimes will even say something which I know isn't always the best approach and has gotten me in confronting situations before. But I'm just so sick of it. How do any of you folks deal with this? Even if it's just internally? I guess just looking for some solidarity as l know I'm definitely not the only person this happens to but I don't have that many butch or transmasc friends

Israel would be allowed to defend itself during a genocide against Yemen, among others, which Israel is trying to stop.

To be clear, slavery still very much exists under the 13th amendment. Considering that incarceration rates for black people went up after the abolition of slavery and the disproportionate incarceration rates today…the prison system is very much rooted in racism, exploitation and indeed oppression.
After the abolition of slavery, most planters had difficulties satisfying their demand for labor.' Previously, enslaved people were an inexpensive workforce that made Southern agriculture lucrative (Wright, 2013; Fogel & Engerman, 1974). However, the Civil War marked the end of this slave-based labor system. Even though, agriculture faced various other difficulties, including the loss of livestock, fences, and barns, the largest concern to farmers was the lack of a system to ensure an adequate supply of labor. Evidence on how this labor demand was met remains anecdotal. Historian David Oshinsky, in his history of the Mississippi prisons, argues that white Southern elites were able to re-create the antebellum institutions by taking advantage of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, except as a punishment for a crime. Thus, black men were convicted for minor offenses and sent to prison farms and chain gangs to secure labor (Oshinsky, 1997). New data confirm that African American convicts partly replaced slave labor in the US Published 29 June 2020 The large overrepresentation of African Americans in the US prison population can be traced back to the institutions that emerged after the abolition of slavery. Using new data from prisons records and historical census, a study from the University of Gothenburg confirm that the high levels of incarceration in the US started, at least in part, due to labor scarcity in which African American convict labor was used to replace slave labor.

Statement from Consumer Financial Protection Bureau - CFPB Closes Overdraft Loophole to Save Americans Billions in Fees Final rule to save up to $5 billion each year DEC 12, 2024 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) took action to close an outdated overdraft loophole that exempted overdraft loans from lending laws. The agency’s final rule on overdraft fees applies to the banks and credit unions with more than $10 billion in assets that dominate the U.S. market. The reforms will allow large banks several options to manage their overdraft lending program: they can choose to charge $5; to offer overdraft as a courtesy by charging a fee that covers no more than costs or losses; or continue to extend profit-generating overdraft loans if they comply with longstanding lending laws, including disclosing any applicable interest rate. The final rule is expected to add up to $5 billion in annual overdraft fee savings to consumers, or $225 per household that pays overdraft fees. We find that the probability of paying several types of bank account and credit card fees is correlated with consumers' demographic attributes and payment behavior. The percentage of Black consumers who pay overdraft or low-balance fees on their bank accounts or pay late fees or cash-advance fees on their credit cards is higher than the percentage of White consumers who pay those fees. We find that lower-income consumers were significantly more likely to pay overdraft fees, and Black consumers were significantly more likely to pay any bank account fee when we hold income and account balances constant in the regressions.
