Brexit broke the UK- we've got to fix it again!
Presenter of 'The Single Market Show'
Pro-HS2
Rejoining the Single Market only happens when we rejoin the EU- there is no shortcut to that destination.

By the way- conflating the EEA with the EU's Single Market was a tactic that the Brexiteers used to con people into voting out of the EU.

Yes- the border between the EU & the EFTA 4 is a real barrrier to trade that costs time & money.

The exclusion of farming/fisheries from the EEA agrmnt means tariffs/quotas on those goods- throttles that trade.

Not aware of specific modelling on EEA but Treasury doc from March '16 useful- i.e.👇

That's more like it!

You claimed that the UK could rejoin the Single Market & Customs Union, but not the EU.

The Single Market exists between EU members only.

People conflate the EEA with the SM- the EEA does not remove all barriers to trade like the Single Market does.

I'm trying to help your understanding here.

Simon- have you had the time to read the info I sent you?
November 17, 2025 at 1:24 PM
Factually incorrect.

EFTA members are not in the Single Market as they can't freely export agri/fish products into the EU, & still have trade borders with the EU.

And EFTA's own rules also say no customs unions with anyone.

So what options does that leave for the UK?

Do explain how your plan would work then.
November 16, 2025 at 10:59 PM
Customs union and Single Market rejoin only happens when we rejoin the EU, of course.
November 16, 2025 at 7:08 PM
Your quick solution requires rejoining the EU and that process won't happen for quite a while because Farage is alive/not in prison, and will also take a while to negotiate and get a successful result.

Last link is to www.elibrary.imf.org/display/book... that gives a v good run-through of the EC/EFTA history to create the European Economic Space, which later became the EEA.

And here's a link to the 1989 Commission document which takes stock and refers to Cockfield's WP- 'Europe Without Frontiers- Completing the Internal Market' - shorturl.at/w8ih4

I can dropbox these pdfs if you prefer?

Cockfield's (UK Commissioner) WP was the kick up the backside that the EC leaders needed to crack on with the completion of the Single Market (i.e. the internal market between EC mbrs).

Thank you.

Can I ask if you have read Cockfield's White Paper- Completing the Internal Market- from 1985?

He called me abusive because I was tring to get him to tell me which of 2 screenshots I'd posted he thought I had made up and just wouldn't answer so i said he was being obtuse. He then was actually abusive himself and blocked me.

Proper weirdo.
November 13, 2025 at 12:05 PM
In that case you are making some fundamental errors about how Europe functions.

Happy to expand if you are willing to listen.
November 13, 2025 at 10:37 AM
I really wouldn't bother engaging with James- he's a waste of your time.
November 13, 2025 at 10:34 AM
Interesting, but do you actually believe that the option of rejoining the Single Market and Customs Union but not the EU is a real-world future option?
November 12, 2025 at 11:50 PM
You're so precious. Bye.
November 12, 2025 at 11:43 PM
I haven't been abusive. I called you obtuse because you were being obtuse.

You have shown a bizarre unwillingness to educate yourself, but that's your choice.
November 12, 2025 at 11:12 PM
You're still being obtuse. So once again- are you talking about the EFTA one or the EU one?
November 12, 2025 at 10:16 PM
You're being obtuse- I created neither, they are screenshots- so are you talking about the EFTA one or the EU one?
November 12, 2025 at 9:20 PM
There were 2 screenshots- which one?
November 12, 2025 at 6:09 PM
Still waiting to see if my post met your threshold of acceptability...
November 12, 2025 at 5:04 PM
You don't adopt the Euro when you rejoin the EU- it's a separate lengthy process that takes however long it takes, plus our opt-out is still in the EU treaties.

We also can't join Schengen unless Ireland wants to as well- it can't be forced to join Schengen so a UK Schengen opt-out could be agreed.
November 12, 2025 at 5:02 PM
I seriously doubt the EFTA 4 would ever agree to us joining their little club.

1. Norway has already said no.
2. Reread my post where I asked why would we want a trade relationship with the EU like Norway.
3. You don't know what the Single Market is.
4. Rejoining the EU is the best option.👍
