Today is my only day off from my fringe run, and I'm woken up by news of this review in @thetimess.bsky.social which has pretty much blown my mind. So happy that people got what I was trying to do with the book.

quotes from the times review of my book - in The Magic in You, Mat Ricardo gives kids an introduction to doing tricks, with some life lessons thrown in. The result is an oddly charming book that performs a cunning sleight of hand by tricking you into thinking it’s an introduction to magic tricks when actually it’s a self-help manual for introverts. The section on juggling, for example, is as much about dealing with failure. “Take a ball and throw it into the air from one hand to the other. Then as it comes down, I want you to make no attempt whatsoever to catch it. NONE. Just let it fall to the floor with a thud. That’s a drop, and you’re going to be doing a lot of those … The thing is, everyone at some point in their lives couldn’t juggle. And the people who can (Hello!) only can because they decided to learn, and failed and failed and failed until they stopped failing at it.” Ricardo is full of sage advice. “Even if you can’t do the impossible, you can, for sure, do the incredible.” (But best leave the chainsaw juggling to the professionals.)
