Its not too cynical, it's not too cynical ENOUGH. They want to make it seem like working for rations is a good deal, or at least better than the alternative. Its also a warning to people not currently on that SNAP welfare program, we can fuck up your lives too if we don't fall in line.

And an attempt to make people so desperate that any meagre crumbs either party put on the table look like the best/only offer that's gonna come.

It's not just undeveloped empathy, altho it is that. It's a deliberate strategy to make people starving and desperate so they'll be too

When I talk IRL with socialists it's not so academic and weird. A lot of my education has just been from comrades, watching them work, asking questions, on the streets, in pubs, wherever. They should make it easy to ask questions and get involved, if they're a good mob. I get what you mean tho 😅

As a teenager I occasionally stole an art or photography book, when times were tough. I think in Australia people would be less enthusiastic about buying a bible 😅
