The explicit aim of this is to supplant and replace the United Nations. Trump remains chairman when (or should that be if?) he is no longer president. There's a billion dollar joining fee for new members. Surely even Tony Blair can see he should have no part of this.

As Zelensky says, the question now is "can Europe respond?".

Having listened to the whole thing now, Polanski is not impressive. Seems to see the world through the prism of goodies (people like him) and baddies (people like Trump). In other words, the way people who don't understand politics think about politics 🤦🏻

NATO is on death row. The temporary stay of execution is irrelevant.. Europeans need to get to get through the grief cycle as quickly as possible and congeal into it's own sphere of influence.

10 years ago these proposals would be way outside the Overton window. Not so sure they are now. We are dealing with a US administration which, as Richard Murphy says, is basically Fascist. Do we want to host their military bases? Do we want to continue be in a military alliance with such a regime?
January 22, 2026 at 11:46 AM
Used to think that too. Valid hypothesis but apparently the data doesn't support it. Counter-intuitively we are more exposed to opposing points of view than we ever have been. Precisely because of social media. Genesis of the current toxicity predates social media. It's an amplifier not a signal.

Totally agree that he's the symptom rather than the cause. But it's hard to believe this is all down to a sudden outbreak of nastiness across the Western World. The fact that it's happening in so many places indicates the causes are structural. Hence Farage, Le Pen, AFD, Meloni etc
January 19, 2026 at 9:50 PM
Fair comment. It's obviously structural because it's happening in Europe too but it's not like they weren't warned. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020... sad for him. As tragic as it is dangerous for all of us.
Donald Trump's behavior was shaped by his 'sociopath' father, niece writes in bombshell book
The Guardian has obtained a copy of Too Much and Never Enough, in which author Mary Trump thanks president’s sister for ‘enlightening information’

On a purely human level, I truly feel pity for Trump. He's clearly an off-the-scale narcissist and according to Mary Trump was subjected to being belittled by his bullying father as a child. As a result, he's spent his life in an unquenchable pursuit of affirmation and admiration...

But here's what Tice actually said "I think what the president is most concerned about is the risk of particularly China, but also Russia, gaining an extra presence in and around Greenland".

You're watching NewsNight and find yourself agreeing more with Steve Baker than anyone else😮

Surprised at their suprise. Isn't this just what Fascists do. A good example of what Neal Stephenson termed "a dim-witted epiphany"
January 14, 2026 at 6:30 PM
They don't even bother not to say the quiet part out loud. Stephen Miller said recently on CNN that the US was operating in the real world that "is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power… these are the iron laws of the world since the beginning of time".

Trump supporter's arguments are so weak on NewsNight even Corbyn is trouncing her. They're gonna Greenland sooner or later. That will be the de facto end of NATO
January 5, 2026 at 10:56 PM
What they're doing is internally consistent from their extreme nationalistic point of view. If your only consideration is 'what can we get away with' this all makes perfect sense. Wouldn't want to be Greenland, Columbia or even Canada right now. The unthinkable is becoming thinkable.
