meet the curators behind our book boxes, with three women. Mary-Ann Yazedjian, Curator of our BC Culinary Book Box, is a bookseller at Black Bond Books & Book Warehouse. She has been working with books her whole adult life. A degree in English Lit inspired her love of literature, and she’s never looked back. She can’t imagine a career where she doesn’t get to talk about books all the time. ID: she had a light skin tone, short curly hair, and wears glasses. HILARY ATLEO, Curator of our Indigenous Voices Box is Anishinaabe from Curve Lake, Ontario, but now spends more time in her husband, Cliff Atleo’s, Nuu-chah-nulth territories on the west coast of Vancouver Island. In 2017, after several years of experience in the bookselling industry, Hilary and Cliff opened Iron Dog Books. Hilary has a light skin tone, dark brown hair, wears glasses and is pictured smiling. KERRI DOYLE, Curator of our Early Readers Book Box, is the owner of Books & Shenanigans. When she first moved to Victoria 10 years ago, she downsized and got rid of all of her books. She never recovered from that, and opened her own bookshop during the pandemic. Her favourite thing is to help people find their next great read. Read local bc monthly newsletter: As daylight slips away a little earlier and the breeze grows a little colder, we can feel Autumn approaching. With the change of seasons comes time for us to reflect and prepare our favourite remedies: hot teas and coffee on hand, wool socks and slippers and sweatpants at the front of our wardrobe, and homes filled with heavy blankets, curated book stacks, and warm light from a myriad of lamps, candles, and fireplaces. My favourite part of the beginning of fall has always been buying new stationary, soft leathery notebooks, and inky pens, and perusing local book stores for new stories to fall into. We have curated book lists with some of the best that BC has to offer, so you can do just that. Pick up a copy at your nearest local indie bookstore!This September is filled with literary festivals and readings that we’ve highlighted for you, so you can find a writing retreat that enlivens your practice, and attend readings that encapsulate you.
