It's such a a good episode! So happy to see someone else enjoying Danger Man, I've been watching it over the past few weeks and loving it but I feel kinda insane when I try to tell people that a show called "Danger Man" with the most generic 60s spy show premise was actually really good

Updates: The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove is great fun, loved all the pokes at Bond and previous Danger Man episodes. On the other end of the Danger Man episode tone spectrum, It's Up to the Lady is (intentionally) infuriating

Also I'm ridiculously tempted to start a multi year project just watching a whole slate of old spy movies and shows. Like I've never even seen a James bond movie. I didn't realize this shit could be good and now I want to categorize every spy ever created based on how much they hate their boss

Anyways if anyone sees this check out Danger Man, starting with season 2 probably. It may not be super unique, but it's really solid and consistent and honestly quite watchable! Holds up much better than you would expect

And it's aged pretty well overall! Even McGoohan being weird abt romance actually helped bc female characters have to stand on their own. Not that there aren't a couple of characters that just exist to flirt with Drake, but still overall they have interesting roles and it helps it feel more modern

Also appreciate the cold war politics vibes. In a lot of ways the series seems interested in independence movements and and the legacy of imperialism which maybe wasn't unusual for the 60s but it's rlly interesting to see today. Esp because again, they take the show seriously! With a few silly bits

Also it really doesn't need the fistfights lol. But I do appreciate how much it just plays it straight, it feels like a lot of people did their best and all of their efforts worked out to make something pretty consistently polished! In a way it's the opposite of The Prisoner lol

It bothers me a little bit bc it truly is the most generic possible 60s spy show. And like it has problems! Notably brown face/yellow face in a couple episodes and despite the skepticism of Drake's superiors sometimes there's a bit of a benevolent colonialism British justification vibe.

Watched a couple episodes of Callan as well and it is also such a great show but in the past couple of days I've found myself wanting to watch Danger Man as an almost comfort show over the more downbeat Callan. I just like the variety and think it balances things so well. Also pretty noir vibes!!

Same for the silly disquises among the different episodes, they just make things fun and change things up a little!

But I also appreciated the variety in the 10ish episodes I've seen. Watched A ROOM IN THE BASEMENT a couple days ago and it's basically just a fun little heist! It's a great contrast to some of the more downbeat episodes but still has the same quality

When I first started the show, after watching S1E1 I skipped to S2 with YESTERDAY'S ENEMIES and COLONY THREE and both were so so good, really sold me on the show as a whole. They capture the more developed and cynical feel that represents the second season to me

Just watched THE LONELY CHAIR, which was a lot of fun! The half hour episodes are a little tougher for me as they have to cram so much into a short timeframe and inevitably end up cutting parts out. But this one did it well. Same for THE GALLOWS TREE and JOSETTA out of the 5 or 6 I've seen

It's fun! You watch a bunch of characters make absolutely terrible decisions and the narrator is constantly making fun of them, but it's all done with a tone of empathy. You end up loving the characters and understanding yourself a little better
