I’m sure my parents regretted this:

The large cat is Peter. Back when he was our Junior Cat, Peter was bullied by the older two. So after they passed, we figured he would enjoy being the only cat of the house. We were wrong. Peter pined until we adopted Sam and Frodo. Now he grooms them (and tries to eat their kitten kibble).

That scene from the old novel with Murderbot’s humans, and ART’s humans, working happily together… it reminds me of this.
