There is a compounded problem with the horrific so-called reciprocal tariff policy, not only are they very high, they are capricious, and subject to unpredictable change. This is a terrible self-inflicted economic catastrophe reflected in today's dramatic rise in the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX).

On flimsy evidence epsilon, the price elasticity of imports, is assumed to be 4 and psi, the price elasticity of tariffs, is 0.25. Multiplied that equals 1. These elasticities are assumed to be identical across all countries. So the denominator is simply the imports from the country.

The CBOE Volatility Index is now at its highest point this year as the Trump Administration vacillates nearly daily on imposing significant tariffs on the chief trading partners. Today VIX has risen 11.31 percent with a four week pause on Mexico, but tariffs still in place with Canada and China.
