The pattern on the larvae puts me in mind of some Native Anerican designs, but I can see the Chinese dragon costume look to it too.

@davegoulson.bsky.social writes about this in 'Sting in the Tail' along with the fascinating idea that cuckoo bumblebees may be more closely related to their hosts than to other cuckoo species.

Trying to work out if these ones I found today on a hose reel are in a better or worse position (the head wasn't in the holster).
7-spots don't seem bothered about being within an enclosed space. I see several together in teasel heads with their butts out in the cold, even in frost and snow.

There's something so wonderful about a corvid who trusts you. There's a lot going on behind those eyes (namely "will this human share?" I bet).

It's a fantastic plant for pollinators- especially the neglected flies, wasps and beetles. You've got a tremendous amount of biting midges on there!

We have Lasius flavus in Europe, which has a similar appearance and behaviour. They are ecosystem engineers in grasslands where they manage vegetation and soil dynamics. They're a cover species in this month's British Wildlife Magazine.

I lose track of who I've told this, but one appeared on the family dinghy in Cornwall when I was 8 or so and I was convinced it was a madagascan Giraffe Weevil brought in on a cargo ship! One of my favourite insects as a kid. I suppose the Giraffe Weevil is just one of these with extensions.
