Bastrop is an imperfect analogy to current U.S. events, though, because we're watching not the cycle of renewal but the deliberate burning down of the entire system to benefit a few who already have too much.

Thank you to members of Congress who fought for free filing. Turbo Tax sure was delighted not to offer me a free option. Pay $170 fee in order to pay my taxes? Capitalism is the best system? I don't know. Intuit and H&R Block spent a lot to keep you from filing for free. I used 1040.com #freefile

I'm reading The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah about the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. Expel the undocumented migrant workforce, give capital free rein, cut laws protecting labor from exploitation. And then? We have been through this before, then forget in a dream of American exceptionalism. 💙📚
