I missed this, but the CDC updated the risk to people around poultry & dairy cows about a week ago. It is now Moderate to High, even though it's been that for 70 confirmed H5N1 cases now & more undetected.

Now is the time to offer stockpiled vaccines to people at risk.

#USDA didn't report any new #H5N1 #birdflu infected dairy herds today. They only reported 4 new herds last week, in CA (2), MI (1) & NV (1).
Given what's happening in the US government right now, it's not clear if there are no new herds to report or a testing backlog.

I have some experience in the food processing industry. The USDA folks in my facilities were dedicated and hardworking.

However, they can only find
- What they are looking for, and
- What they have the resources to find.

USDA staff and procedures are simply insufficient by magnitudes to find H5N1.

The Ed Yong quote highlighted by Mr. Deknatel is very insightful.

If the severity of H5N1 effect is high enough, the probability of occurrence becomes less important in your risk calculation.

If "IT" happens, it could be very, very bad.

That is why you need to prepare beyond masks and sanitizer.
“The way that it’s often framed is: ‘Tell me, on a scale of 1 to 10, how worried you are that H5N1 is going to go pandemic.’ I think the more important question is, if it does, how screwed are we? And the answer is: really.”

We currently have no credible Early Warning System for an H5N1 pandemic. The federal government will not provide one. Some states may, but your state probably won't.

Widely available rapid testing could help fill that gap.

I know, I'm a bit of a broken record (old-guy metaphor). But the question has only become more relevant 60 days after I asked the H5N1 community here:

"How will you know...".
About a month ago I asked "If H5N1 goes H2H2H, how will you know?"

If the Trump Administration continues to withhold public health data, we MUST look for other indicators that the situation has changed.

- Hospitals/clinics at capacity
- Schools cancelled
- Reduced civil services
- Shortages
- ...
H5N1 Herald Event - an occurrence or action that serves as a precursor or announcement of something significant to come.

If H5N1 goes H2H2H, how will you know?

- How long until our government informs you?
- How fast will it spread?
- What will cause you to significantly change your daily routine?

3. Infected & undetected vets
