As I’ve written in my work in the EU’s authoritarian equilibrium- the key for the local autocrat is to maintain what Ed Gibson calls “boundary control” . This move helps do that

Key point re elections in Poland, as @politico.eu notes: they will not be fair.
And yet from past unfair elections in Hungary we know that the EU - which is supposed to be composed of democracies that hold free and fair elections- will say nothing critical about it

Orbán is extorting the EU, threatening to veto Ukraine aid to pressure EU to release funds it has suspended due to his corruption & rule of law violations. EUCO President Michel was right to critique such extortion practices last week in the UN context, but he should see the same applies to the EU

Note that if the Commission caves in to Orbán to secure his support for EU budget for Ukraine, this would be part of broader pattern of Commission sacrificing its law enforcement role to win govts’ support for its policy agenda. Tom Pavone & I analyze this in our forthcoming World Politics article 👇

“Brussels to unfreeze Hungary funds as it seeks help for Ukraine”. Having briefly showed some backbone in standing up to the Orbán autocracy, the Commission appears set to return to Its old pattern of appeasement. Caving in to his blackmail will only encourage more of it. www.ft.com/content/d445...
