I frequently see pieces by EU folks that suggest that Norway is on the verge of joining - this belief is fuelled by politicans here who call for a 'new EU debate'. There may be good reasons for joining but I don't see much appetite for this debate. The presumed new leader of the Conservatives...

Arendt saw Italian Fascism as far too statist to belong to same category - the movement subordinated to the state. The USSR became more statist over time but it always had to navigate between state and movement. MAGA contains the same tensions but this is a different country and a different era.

The final paragraph here points to the inconsistency between Trump's expressed indifference to the internal political regime in other countries and the actual practice of the Administration. This speaks to the broader problem of 'Realist' theory and statecraft that over the last 200 years

The Icelandic guy who cuts my hair periodically complains that during the 2008 banking crisis Gordon Brown labelled the whole country as terrorist so he could use emergency powers to freeze bank accounts in the UK.

Public discourse would be much more sensible if fewer things were...
