During WWII, "Yank: The Army Weekly," featured pin-ups of Hollywood starlets for GIs. In May 1943 the magazine's photographer John A. Bushemi captured this pin-up for WACs--Staff Sergeant Charles Gardocki, demonstrating how to get the most out of a coconut tree for clothes, food, and shelter.

OTD in 1944 during the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, an officer with the 1st Infantry Division, Captain Ozell Smoot, was killed. Only a month before he had provided much-needed aid and comfort to a shaky former wounded man--war correspondent Richard Tregaskis.
