That is just one of the most obvious indicators that the video and your image are altered. It’s a cool image and I get why you used it. I just think it’s important to note in the caption or alternative text that it is altered.

This is the altered video your still was taken from. Aircraft the size of the one depicted create powerful wakes of air just like a boat. Shooting a video from another aircraft in this position is not possible. www.shutterstock.com/video/clip-1...

My intent here is not to call into question the integrity of your reporting or this post. I respect the work of Nieman Lab. I’m a frequently reader, and I want to see the attention to detail I’ve come to expect from the organization and its work.

I stand corrected. It’s not AI-manipulated, but it is an altered photo (altered to add the airplane). Image without airplane: www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/... I would expect altered images to be identified on @niemanlab.org posts. Is that not a requirement?

Normally these kinds of things just float on by without much thought. But the choice of an image not related to the topic of the story, which is AI-manipulated to include an airplane that looks like it is going to crash, without a proper attribution or alt text, feels like it needs attention.

On a smaller note, the caption at the bottom of the article says the airplane is coming in for a "safe landing," but it is not lined up with a runway, has no landing gear or flaps deployed. This plane looks like it is headed for an emergency gear-up landing.

I was intrigued to read this, but I got distracted by the header image. There is no alternative text for the image (an accessibility issue), and the airplane in it is clearly AI-generated. Does Nieman Lab have a policy about identifying AI-manipulated images?

It’s 4D chess. This is actually Trump’s first term and he will run for his second term in 2028.

Is it possible to discredit the party for a generation when the GOP has a 24/7 hype channel that tells everyone it’s all great? I worry there is no reality for the FOX crowd anymore.
