Ancient Maya did not understand the consequences of clearing all the forests and the resulting drought and water scarcity. In response they sacrificed thousands of people a day to the gods. Working class people lost their heads, not the wealthy class. Thank the gods history doesn't repeat.

Last June, wildfires toasted these pine forests sending smoke and carbon into the atmosphere. Scientists and firefighters from the US and Belize are working together to recover, restore, and sequester the carbon that was lost w/ indigenous burning and hard work. Nonprofits 4 nature.
