Walter Reuther was wounded by a shotgun blast in 1948. No one was ever convicted of the attack, and the FBI refused to investigate. Reuther's enemies were successful in assassinating him in 1970 in a sabotaged plane. The FBI was responsible for an investigation but never conducted one.

On 5/9/70 under rainy night time conditions Walter Reuther's plane was inexplicable diverted to a runway without runway end identifying lights. This was a death sentence as it forced the pilot to rely on an altimeter made for the military reading 250 ft too high due to 7 defects.
