A few times a year, I get to do what I call an “album listen.” I sit down and play an album that I’ve never heard before, beginning to end, without pausing, and with my undivided attention. No looking at my phone or other distractions. Tonight, the album is The Magnolia Electric Co. by Songs: Ohia.

A bit earlier than usual this year, spent a good amount of this afternoon partaking of the annual Halloween and fall harvest decorating around our place. One of my favorite traditions.

Thanks, man. We met once. At Cinepocalypse 2018. I was there for a showing of a film I was key PA on, Gags the Clown. Picked up 2 copies of your book, We Are Where the Nightmares Go, one for me, one for my best friend. You and I had a nice chat about whiskey.

This also arrived today, my latest music order. What’s synchronicitously hilarious and awesome is that, with tax and shipping, the total was exactly $69.
- The Magnetic Fields: 69 Love Songs
- Hurray for the Riff Raff: Life on Earth
- Curtis Harding: Face Your Fear

Tonight’s reading accompaniment is a bottle of Pinot noir and The Doors: Live in Bakersfield, California - August 21, 1970

(If you are a Doors Apologist, I hope you can find the strength within yourself to knock off that shit. And I say that as someone whose spouse LOATHES The Doors’ music.)

Since college, I’ve had 2 favorite bands. Kansas City-based musicians The Rainmakers are one of them, and they’re the one nearer and dearer to me. This is one of my favorite live albums — of any musical act. (If you’re looking for it, it’s at Archive.org, available there with the band’s permission.)

Earlier this year, a friend introduced me to the music of Jason Molina, specifically his band Songs: Ohia. I was blown away, truly in awe of what I heard. It was the album The Lioness Sessions. So i dove down the rabbit hole and learned that there was a biography about him, which I’m now reading.

Now listening to Moondog’s 1969 self-titled album. So good.

Picked up this book today. The pull quote alone (see pic) makes this a must-read.

I’ve now read Dhalgren. Samuel Delany’s epic genre-bending novel took me 6 weeks to read. Would I recommend it? Yes, but only to certain people. Am I glad to be done with it? Unqualified yes. The journey is arguably not worthwhile, but it’s consistently thought-provoking, atmospheric, and memorable.

Happy Pride Month 2025! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ While I’m not LGBTQ+, I’m fortunate to have many people close to me and known many more who are, and I’m honored to stand with them and others. Of my myriad tshirts, some can specifically be dubbed Pride attire. This one is a tour shirt from indie musician Wryn. #pride2025
