“You know the way around that is to come sleep at my place while I’m working late, right? I’m putting a couch bed in the room I’m using as an office, you’re always welcome.” He shook his head. “Seriously, though, get some rest. I’m glad you’re putting taking care of yourself over me.”

“And what if I am? I’ll have you know, I’m actually kinda good at arguing. Like, to the point where people pay me to do it. Crazy, right?” He leaned back in his chair. “Anyway, choosing my own title ain’t how getting demoted works! You tell me, what am I gonna be now?”

Ray laughed when she poked him, and rolled his eyes. “I’ve been demoted from best friend in the world, huh? Wow. After everything I’ve done for you…!”
He was very clearly joking around.

“It does mean a whole lot. I know you’ve got a whole lot of… catching up to do, I don’t wanna assume you can just drop everything and hang out with me.” He smiles, and takes a sip of his champagne. “But I do really love when you do. Always have.”

“If I’m being honest, I feel it. It’s kinda why I had everyone come out here, enjoy the whole winning feeling before reality hits again tomorrow.” He sighs. “Thanks for joining me, by the way. I know it was real short notice.”

“Maybe?”

He grins, and moves a little closer to her.

“Not often that I get a case worth celebrating, is it?”

“He took out three people. We’d covered that part when I agreed to represent him. He’d lied about his alibi — his false alibi, Miles. I’m going to have to go to court and say that instead of lying about being at the laundrette, he’d lied about being at the car dealership.”
