The matrix protocol/server(s) and it's client ecosystem have matured significantly since last I poked around there. Are the usual pitfalls/costs of self-hosting and the inherit annoyance of operating it residentially a dealbreaker for you? Its a compromise I'm personally taking, though i see it.

The only feature that discord has that has been difficult to substitute is real-time secure screencasting with audio. Otherwise, absolutely everything is either annoying, effectively useless, or very easy to substitute in a way that gives you leagues more peace of mind or control.
