Basically convenience, you could pay a short fee and listen to whatever song instead of going out to buy a new album or risk piracy and catching some sort of virus.

Then enshittification happened.

Just a reminder that some artists still sell a digital version of their albums so you only need to pay once and can still support them, also in some countries downloading things "not through official means" is not piracy as long as you keep the copy only to yourself.
