I smiled a lot when I worked retail. Sometimes it was because I genuinely enjoyed helping a customer find what they needed, or discover something new.

Sometimes it was because I was thinking about how hard I was going to make fun of this person over drinks later.

It also presumes that women didn’t have a workplace, when women have always worked. Even if a woman doesn’t get a paycheck but maintaining a home, tending to children etc, is definitely work.
