what if this deal was not about Ukraine? I thought it was mainly Trump accommodating one of his bosses. But maybe this is a bigger alliance- the ex-cold war foes looking for more together. Or Putin wanting it all.

It works fine from a physics standpoint. Regulatory is a whole different matter. Same thing I told a manufacturer over 10 years ago. Many utilities fought solar tie ins, claiming safety concerns, and mad it more difficult to do even on a larger scale.
These tie-ins did happen, even net metering.
