Almas knew the sensation, having died more times than she could count. But she would never grow accustomed to the feeling of being brought back to life. When she awoke, her throat was thick with the ashes of her remains, her head filled with chaotic whispers. Memories danced just out of reach. One of a shadow's tender hold around her throat, oh-so-gentle like the gazelle she was. Another of being pressed into sinewy warmth, a blade slithering against her jugular like a cold tongue, pulling, grabbing, seizing her into its maw. She strained to grasp them, but they slipped through her fingers like smoke, leaving only an aching emptiness behind. The Book liked to fool with her, after all.
