Ah yes. "why hasn't Garp quit the Marines" has finally been answered. One of the great mysteries. Unfortunately, he seems unaware of the potency of the rank-and-file as a potential revolutionary force. Which is odd considering, y'know, who his son is. Is Garp even aware of Dragon? Like, as a person?

So this is the prequel I actually want to follow, and I wish more of the flashback could have been about this.

#OnePiece1164 I wonder if this is setting Teach up as the Gollum of One Piece. In other words, the loathsome villainous figure who nevertheless ends up being the key player in saving the world. If so, Kuma's heroic act, much like Frodo's mercy, has tremendous meaning for the soul of the narrative.

Actually impressed with Ruridragon being a shonen manga with the guts to be like, "no, there's only one cute monster girl, you will never meet any others, and even if you did, you would never build a supporting ensemble with them and ABSOLUTELY never fight any of them"

I do like that, the more we learn about the Previous Generation, the more apparent it is that, where there are similarities, Luffy is NOT "the next Roger." in fact, in this flashback Luffy comes off as more aligned to Rocks, while Blackbeard seems to share aspects of Roger's worldview.

Wow this effect... still makes him look like an octopus. Which I guess the manga does too. But y'know. I get that the look is iconic but you really can't depict speed this way in a moving medium

So there's a lot in this adaptation I have issue with, but the fact that they're including the Billower Bike is really indicative of what I actually love about this show.

Ichi the Witch has always been at its best when showing us fun little weirdos we get to hang out with for a bit. The kind of characters who are desperate for an Anime Filler Arc to put an entertainingly useless spotlight on them. Utterly delightful. They're all my favorite.
