Despite the pressure some creators have been trying to put on others to find an alternative to Meta, I won't be going to Xiaohongshu (RedNote), in order to be (arguably performatively) socially conscious. At first I thought it was a perfect & to the US government, who is violating our rights under the guise of "protecting" our data, and I tried to join. But as I waited for a verification code, it wasn't sitting right with me. And I realized why: Xiaohongshu is a space that isn't meant for us (Americans). It's meant for people in and out of China who have connection to China. Ways for families to connect. A safe space. Overtaking that app is just another form of colonizing that I cannot get behind. I don't want to be apart of that. So l've deleted my half created account. I don't care what others do. I only control me. And I refuse to be like the creators who tried to put pressure on others to find alternatives. I'm not a Zucky apologist, and he might be like Muskrat now, but he isn't the big bad in this world. He isn't the big good either. But it's what is available until someone connected to the government decides to take Meta down, like they did to TikTok. I wish nothing but the best for everyone on Xiaohongshu, I hope the rise in popularity helps bring users more great content and app features (without being destructive first). I am also hopeful that the influx of people doesn't destroy the app for the OG. I don't want to be apart of folks not being able to use the app to maintain contact with family, friends, and culture in China. But if the app encourages some of us Americans to learn mandarin, that is a really cool side effect that I can really appreciate! I'll be on Instagram until something better comes along, and am trying to follow every creator from TikTok there, while the app is still functioning. Good luck, and goodnight TikTok. Fuck Trump & US Government.
