As a former Alaskan this is spot on. Flying on small planes in Alaska is dangerous, it's just a fact of life in Alaska.

It is my inference that they were not in the office because it was Saturday. I've noticed in other reports people were notified or noticed that their logins were no longer working in off hours. I don't have any special information, but off hours notice does avoid exactly the situation you describe.

You're welcome. To be clear, the information that the officials were "put on leave" on Saturday came from CNN and has been reported in various other relatively mainstream sources. While they are under-reporting the seriousness of the events, they are reporting basic facts.

The senior USAID officials were "put on leave" on Saturday. Presumably they were not in the office at that time. In general that seems to be the pattern, people get locked out at times they wouldn't normally be in the office. Their logins don't work anymore and their ID won't get them in.
