Depends how involved you can or want to be. I've been on a few projects where joining early meant the music got to shape and influence other elements because it was mocked up first and fit with the creative vision that was still only in the creators' minds

I'd simply say that a great soundtrack is not one that's musically sophisticated, it's just one that fits whatever the game is.
