especially bc i have akechi. of course he needs joker!!!! (okay but actually, apparently joker is the only character akechi somewhat has synergy with, it looks like the overall consensus on akechi is that he’s mid bc he doesn’t really do anything particularly well. but that is okay 🥰)

well to be clear, i had 5 characters i could pick from and 4 of the others i didn’t have (i didn’t have joker, yusuke, makoto, yui, and i had chord already). but obviously i picked joker

also my hellotalk pro tip is that people on there suck at starting conversations on there with anything but a “hello”, but if you mention that you like danmei in your bio, danmei fans will actually start a genuine conversation with you. but uhhhh you have to be a danmei fan learning chinese lol

it’s apparently more on the feminine side and i am a guy but 1.) don’t care about gender, 2.) i absolutely love the meaning, 3.) they’re characters i love to write and 4.) they’re sounds that are much easier for me to pronounce compared to certain other sounds

one of them was insistent that i have a chinese name so she suggested to me 陈念音 from “念念不忘，必有回音” (i think that last word is supposed to be 回响 but shhhh 音 is also there in the full passage). so uhhhh guess i have that now!

i’ve actually shut off my visibility because i get so many people trying to speak to me but i found two really solid people i’ve been consistently speaking to and i already easily spend hours talking to them every day. it’s kind of becoming a problem LOL

so at the very least we have the common topic of language learning. and also if the conversation dies out, it doesn’t feel like you “failed to befriend someone” because that isn’t the goal of the app

i think my thing is that i’ve always wanted to try similar apps in general (NOT for language learning but just for making friends) bc i’m terrible at conversations and friendship but. idk. that feels weird. but with language learning apps, i actually feel like i have a “reason” to be on there

genuinely so fucking fun, i know a lot of people have bad experiences with language exchange apps but i’m really having a great time yapping with people about danmei

i am fine with and enjoy reading that kind of stuff UNLESS you also simultaneously want me to believe that the character is a good, moral, and kind person

i like noncon and dubcon, just not when it comes in the form of what the narrative wants you to interpret as “well-intended possessiveness” (if you get what i mean)

3. it now feels worse squandering my time scrolling on social media now that i have a job but i don’t have anything else productive to do except chinese
4. i now have a more structured, anchored daily routine which means i can attach daily habits with chinese to those anchors
