Death of the author is only a valid option when the author is actually dead, imo. Cultural relevancy is still monetizable even if readers refuse to support the author directly. Capitalism will capitalize.

And on a personal note, I am particularly turned off by "literary" books that are older. Most are misogynistic to some degree. There are plenty of notable exceptions to the rule but I have no interest in misogynistic material anymore. It isn't worth my limited time on this earth.

It will typically turn me off from reading it. I've done my fair share of careful reading; at this point in my life/career I want books that don't make me work so hard in my leisure time. I expect a "literary" book to demand close attention to its thesis and language.
