She fought to the very end, even surviving another operation in her final year, and today her fight is over. She's suffered enough to be able to retire peacefully. All dogs go to heaven, and today, my beloved, strongest dog, Maya, has gone there too.

Around age 10, her legs gave out, but after spinal surgery and extensive rehabilitation, she was able to walk again, and even hop along, but she walked on her own for another 7 years. In her final years, her health was already on the line, with bad eyes, teeth, and a host of ailments.

Even then I understood how painful it would be for me when she was gone. As soon as I turned 18, I immediately got my first tattoo of her, so I would always know she was with me, even if she wasn't nearby, even if she was far away.

She was there for me and warmed me at night when it seemed like I had no one and nothing. I am so grateful to her for being there for me and for forgiving the disagreements we had. She was the best, smartest, and wisest dog. I was worried about her passing even when she was only 9 years old.
