Appreciator of bugs and birds. Fan of trails and green infrastructure. Current obsession: detrashing and restoring Iowa's Bottle Bill.
Just saw an article about Yuengling beer expanding distribution into Iowa in 2026. Some enterprising litterer beat them to it earlier this year.

Barq's! This is the very first can of yours I've picked up. Congrats, I guess.

Hey Ice Mountain! Thanks for the Litter of the Day. Will you support a national bottle bill that includes water bottles, to help keep your garbage from littering our roadways natural spaces?

Doritos--you're the second most-littered snack bag I've picked up. What are you doing to make sure your trash doesn't end up littering our roadways and waterways?

Can you walk a mile without encountering a littered water bottle? I haven't managed yet.

The plastics/fossil fuel industry pollute our world in so many ways. What are they doing to help clean it up?

Hey Maverik. Welcome to Iowa. Thanks for the Litter of the Day.

Always nice when you toss your garbage on our roadways, and even better when it's made of material that crumbles into thousands of tiny pieces if we don't pick up after you quickly enough.

I wonder what future archaeologists are going to think as they unearth billions of these from the sediment.

If only there were a way to prevent it....

I bet it really sucks when someone just up and shoots you while you're going about your daily business.

Fast food cups find their way into our environment far more often than they should. Other single-use beverage containers, like cans and bottles, can be captured via bottle bill redemption programs, but no such thing exists for these cups, nor for their lids and straws.

Plastic cans, plastic food packaging, aluminum cans, fast-food cups/lids/straws...businesses all happily and obliviously dumping their garbage around our neighborhoods.

Thanks for the garbage, Skittles/Mars Inc.!

Always fun to find the latest...flavors? that the mobile boozers are enjoying.

50 single-use beverage containers in 30 seconds, all picked up on a single morning walk.

We can do better.

Two cans, both alike in dignity,
In fair Iowa, where we lay our scene...

Both aluminum. Both single-use beverage cans. But one has a deposit in IA, the other doesn't. How does that make sense? Let's fix our bottle bill to include water bottles and cans.

They're like mushrooms, these flimsy plastic water bottles. Popping up everywhere. Except instead of spores they shed microplastics. Thanks, Costco, for bringing all the garbage into our neighborhoods! Will you support a national bottle bill to make sure they get recycled appropriately?

Today's Litter of the Day: a red plastic straw, nestled among a variety of weedy plants (common ragweed, black medic, lamb's quarters, dandelion...). A snapshot in red and green showing the human footprint on our natural world.

I don't pick up a lot of snack bags in comparison to beverage containers, but when I do...there's a good chance it's courtesy of Cheetos.

Congrats, Cheetos/Frito-Lay, on being today's Litter of the Day!

Bottled water wasn't really a thing when Iowa's bottle bill was passed nearly 50 years ago. They are certainly a thing now. It's long past time that they were included in the deposit program.

Sam's/Walmart—little help? Will you support a national bottle bill to keep your garbage off our streets?

Coke. Coca-Cola. Bro. You keep leaving your garbage around my neighborhood.

Will you support a national bottle bill to make sure it gets recycled properly?

Bro.

Picked up a lot more yesterday, but here's #9on9. Pick up 9 pieces of litter on the 9th of every month. Pass it on.

Grates help keep trash out of stormwater basins and waterways. You know what would help even more?

A functional bottle bill. Look at all those single-use beverage containers. Slap a quarter deposit on each of those babies and see how many go astray on the way to being recycled.
