Don't worry, trans guys are not exempt from that. The "you're just a dirty fujoshi freak fetishizing innocent gay men" rhetoric both internally and externally kept me from transitioning til my 30s, and I'm hardly the only one.

It came about in a more organic and well-intentioned manner, not so much driven by the industry insiders like we seem today. But the whole thing eventually devolved into grift and everyone felt a bit silly about it, so the comparison still seems apt.

Spiritualism in the 19th Century was in part driven by the rise in photography and the industrial revolution-- so much that had seemed impossible was now easily accessible, folks were sure we'd be talking to ghosts and understanding the true nature of god any day now.

In the right contexts it's actually pro-trans! It's meant to include trans men or nonbinary folks who give birth but to whom "maternity" and other gendered language doesn't fit. But definitely a useful niche term that got blown way out of proportion.
