It’s a great headache to have. England look much more like credible contenders to win the World Cup than I can ever recall. Can they beat Spain, Argentina or France? Not a definite ‘nah, no chance’.

Wouldn’t be at all surprised if Trump launches a ‘special military operation’ on Venezuela or elsewhere as distraction from the Epstein thing. My big fear with this imbecile lunatic is that at some point in his presidency he launches nukes - he really doesn’t care if millions die.

Thatcher v ‘wets’, Blair v Brown, Brexit nutters v anyone with a brain, the Johnson years… UK politics always gets mired in tedia. I guess it’s easier for Prime Ministers to deal with court intrigue than address the country’s actual needs.

Have to say, the court intrigue and gossip across the realm is much less juicy under Labour than the much more internecine, regicidal Tories. Dominic Cummings’ feud with, first, Carrie Johnson and then King Oaf himself was proper 🍿. McSweeney vs Streeting? Meh.

Dans la communauté d'apprentissage des langues on parle beaucoup ces derniers temps d'IA. Il y a cependant d'autres développements technologiques intéressants. J'aime beaucoup Kindle Scribe, qui permet de prendre des notes manuscrites sur un écran numérique. #langsky

Personal Shopper (Olivier Assayas, France, 2016). I meant to watch this on Halloween, recommended to me by a friend as a superior modern ghost story. And it really is. Some terrifying moments but also some infinitely sad, moving ones - haunting in every sense. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First there were caffs where you could get a cuppa, then coffee shops with fancy Italian-style -ino’s and - iato’s. Now there are matcha bars. I am about to consume my very first of the ilk. It’s a matcha latte pavlova (I know!). Wish me luck!

Ogni giorno mi lavo i denti (stando su una gamba sola per rafforzare la parte inferiore del corpo!). Ci sono molti parallelismi con l'apprendimento di una lingua, che consiste nel stabilire e mantenere l'esposizione, l'osservazione e la pratica nella lingua ‘target’. #langsky

Multicultural Morden, South London. Every pole and lamppost on the roundabout and high street have had St George’s and Union flags attached with cable ties. Not celebratory or patriotic. This is racist activists staking out territory. Their intent is one day to use those cable ties to bind limbs.

Nelson lived for a few years in Merton - my bit of London. There’s a Nelson Arms here, where he belted out ‘I will survive’ on karaoke nights and aced the footie questions in the pub quiz first Friday of each month.

I’m having a Norman moment. Just finished ‘La langue anglaise n’existe pas’, about how English is suffused with Norman French. Now reading about the Conquest in OUP’s excellent Very Short Introductions series. And watching the historically dubious (but watchable) King and Conqueror on iPlayer.

È difficile trovare "compelling, comprehensible input" nelle prime fasi di apprendimento di una lingua. Questo podcast per studenti di italiano è una perla. Ho apprezzato molto l'episodio sulle routine degli scrittori. #langsky
