Maybe it’s more subtle and my memories from the book have been influenced by the movie. The movie does not talk about the role of the palantir on Denethor’s action, which is why he appears more insane.

The starting point of The Lord of the Ring is that it is a quasi post apocalyptic setting where human realms have almost all collapsed and Gondor is an empty shell ruled by an insane and incompetent steward. A Hobbit saves the day while strong Gondor men are about to be erased from Arda.

I tend not to believe it, frankly. Especially when you look at the background of the dudes who framed it - Trump really believes in his fucking Gaza Riviera. But good to be optimistic, I suppose. At least if the genocide stops, that’s good (we’ll see).
