There won't be the constant annoying ads that now clutter FB. When I open from online, there is a tool bar to the left - I spent a lot of time looking around for it before seeing it there. Hope that helps a bit.

I am learning too - I understand it is more like twitter used to be than FB - you create an account and select who you want to follow. When they post something it will pop up in your feed. You can also share or post something. There is a limit to how much you can write.
