I think the point is new smartphone releases used to be massive upgrades but as the tech matured upgrades got more incremental. Consider the iPhone 4 to 5 or 8 to X vs 14 to 15. You can see it with most tech, like when laptops were first thinning down in the 2000s. The changelogs got boring.

I don't know anyone that would prefer if I was sad as a sign of respect or something. Everyone I'm close to would always prefer I be happy regardless of what happens to them.
