On another side, the number of inhibitory neurons controls the maximal memory capacity of the considered model, while mixed selective neurons can be sustainably encoded as well.

On one side, these inhibitory circuits favour long-term memory consolidation of the learned memories by inducing spontaneous memory recalls in the asynchronous irregular resting phase.

In this paper we show that stable encoding of memories can emerge due to targeted stimulation and simple spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) rules, based only on pre- and post-synaptic spike times, in the absence of any control mechanism.
