Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, 1969. One of the most iconic American literary works and perhaps the greatest anti-war piece of art ever. Vonnegut's prose is the epitome of "deceptively simple", and so many pages in here that will haunt me until I die. So much pain and horror yet so much brilliance. Society of the Spectacle by Guy Debord, 1967. My favorite work of philosophy to date. In conversation with Marx but not unwilling to criticize his ideas where they seem to falter in the latter half of the 20th century. Tackling so much of this overarching "society of the spectacle" in so few pages, from religion and mass media to our understanding of time itself, my reading was very slow and repetitive and i still feel like I've only truly held into like half of what is in here. God I wanna reread this already. Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson, 1992. The impression of this book makes a lot of sense when I tell you that the title has nothing to do with religion but with The Velvet Underground's epic, Heroin. This is a short story cycle of a rural city seemingly abandoned by the greatest world, ravaged and undone by the disease of addiction. Absolutely haunting prose and a brief, powerful nightmare one will never forget. The Complete Works of Arthur Rimbaud, 1870-1875. Rimbaud was a fire lost in time. A modernist poetic form which wouldn't be widespread until decades after his passing, a gay man in one of the most tortured times in history to be gay, a man who burned bright at a painfully young age and never wrote poetry again after his early 20s. All of his poetry is filled with the sublime and the meditative and the painful, but his two major works, A Season in Hell and Illuminations, are still like nothing I've ever read.

Might as well show yall what I'm reading :3 I've mainly been working through Dostoevsky's Demons, as well as deep reading Society of the Spectacle. I'm also going thru the works of Sarah Kane, and been dipping in and out of Percy Shelley and Kafka.
3 books (two softcover and one pocket-sized hardcover), and my kindle with my "August Reads" list shown.
